‘Gear Up!’ is a project that emerged in response to the repression of protests in Germany, which intensified after 7th of October 2023, largely targeting the Palestine solidarity movement.

The project aims to empower people to take creative actions and to show  practical tools to navigate demonstrations safely, both physically and emotionally.

‘Gear Up!’ hosts a variety of workshops dedicated to the creation of protest tools. Participants explore strategies for engaging in demonstrations, reflecting on the importance of mutual support and solidarity in high-tension environments.

Depending on the workshop format participants create noise-makers or sew vests for example.

Previous workshops have taken place in Berlin and Milan, and the project was presented at  the international    conference ‘Artivism Futures: Reimagining Human Rights Activism’ at Kairos, London.

‘Gear Up!’ evolves through dialogues with activists, lawyers and journalists. The findings and research are shared in the form of a zine including a protest manual and toolkit.

The project is supported by Amnesty International and Art Rights Truth Center at the University of York.
